Janesville teachers applaud school board vote to scrap teacher ‘merit pay’ system linked to Educator Effectiveness program

The Janesville Education Association applauded a unanimous decision by the school board this week to scrap a system that tied teacher compensation to the state’s Educator Effectiveness program. Janesville Education Association President Dave Groth, a science teacher at Janesville Parker High School, said the JEA looks forward to working collaboratively with school district administrators and board members “to create a teacher compensation system that is fair, predictable and rewards loyalty to the district and professional development to ensure the children in Janesville school district have the best professional educators.”

Changes in store for online PDP platforms

Since the implementation of PI 34 in 2004 educators who use the PDP (Professional Development Plan) process for license renewal have had two online options to develop their plans, track their progress, upload their artifacts and communicate with PDP team members: Wisconsin Education Career Access Network (WECAN) and The Quality Educator Interactive (QEI). Effective June 15, 2017, WECAN will no longer maintain a PDP platform.

Teachers say evaluation systems are having negative impact on education

U.S. teachers believe that teacher evaluation systems are having a profoundly negative effect on them and on education in general. “Headlines report teacher shortages in nearly every state,” says the Executive Summary of a report titled; Teachers Talk Back: Educators on the Impact of Teacher Evaluation. The report was published this week by the Network for Public Education. “One factor reported in almost every story is the discouragement teachers feel from a reform movement that is increasing pressure to raise student test scores, while reducing support,” it states.

Teachers feeling overloaded and stressed, according to Baraboo survey

Implementation of new educational requirements from the federal, state and local level, combined with the loss of collective bargaining rights, has teachers feeling overloaded and under growing stress, according to a survey of Baraboo teachers. “There’s initiative fatigue,” Baraboo High School teacher and Baraboo Education Association President Kari Nelson told the Baraboo News Republic. “That is the sense we are getting from our members. It is initiative overload.”

NEA supports teachers challenging constitutionality of evaluations

Two accomplished teachers filed a lawsuit Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee, to challenge the evaluation of most teachers in the state based on the standardized test scores of students in courses they did not teach. “This unfair broken system conditions the teacher’s employment on the basis of standardized test scores for courses they do not teach, including some from students they do not teach at all. The system is senseless and indefensible but, worst of all, it doesn’t help kids,” said NEA President Lily Eskelsen García.
